Biography

Leeuwens learned to draw at a young age from his brother-in-law Jan Roëde and later from Willem Hussem and Willem Schrofer, among others. In 1946 he became a member, at the invitation of Willy Broers, of the group Vrij Beelden and participated as an abstract painter in 1947 and 1948 in exhibitions of the Hague Art Circle under the name Experimentelen. He is considered part of the New Hague School (he was a member of the Posthorn Group). Starting in 1955, he also joined the New Images League. In 1959, he exhibited with the Dutch Informal Group. After the war, he visited Paris and became inspired by the work of the École de Paris.
