Biography

Shinkichi Tajiri began sculpting in 1940. In 1949, he goes to Paris to study with Ossip Zadkine and Fernand Léger. He meets Karel Appel and Corneille in Paris and exhibits with them at the 1949 Cobra exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. From 1956, Tajiri lives in the Netherlands. Tajiri is of Japanese descent and was born in Los Angeles. He is interned in camps for Americans of Japanese descent at the beginning of World War II, and in 1943 he joins Europe as a soldier. The experiences of war are clearly reflected in Tajiri’s work.
