Biography
Swedish artist Bengt Lindström was born in a small remote village in the Swedish province of Norrland. Lindström grew up in the vast landscape of Sápmi (Lapland). On his work, then, we see a great influence of the indigenous culture of the Sámi (Lapps). In 1944, he went to study in Stockholm and took drawing classes at the Copenhagen Fine Arts School in Denmark. In 1946, he left for the United States to study at the Art Institute of Chicago, where he was inspired by the work of De Kooning.
In 1947, like many other young modern artists, he went to Paris, where he studied with Fernand Legèr, among others.
In the 1950s, Lindström had a studio in Rueil-Malmaison and began collaborating with the Rive Gauche Gallery in Paris and Tooth & Sons Gallery in London.
Lindström’s work was influenced by Sámi culture. He was also influenced by the COBRA group, which studied in Copenhagen in the late 1940s and many of whose members were active in France in the 1950s.
