Biography

Lucebert (pseudonym for Lubertus Jacobus Swaanswijk) studied for six months at the Institute for Arts and Crafts Education in Amsterdam (later the Gerrit Rietveld Academy). From 1945 he worked under the name Lucebert; bringer of light. He is known primarily as a poet and foreman of the Fifties movement who experimented with new forms in poetry. In the fall of 1948, he joined The Experimental Group, a group of young painters who were mainly inspired by Danish creative expressionism, which had been developing before World War II. The Experimental Group merges into Cobra, the movement founded in Paris in November 1948. Lucebert participates in the first Cobra exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam in 1949. Between 1960 and 1975, he worked primarily as a visual artist, creating figurative-expressionist work.
