Biography

Jan Cremer studied at the art academy of Arnhem (taught by Henk Peeters and Fred Sieger in 1956) and The Hague and the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. He was a member of the Posthorn Group from 1958-1962 (New Hague School). Cremers was also friends with the Nada artists; a group founded in 1959 by students of Peeters and Sieger at the Arnhem Academy. Starting in 1956, Cremer said he worked “abstractly.” In 1959, Cremer made his debut in The Hague with Peinture Barbarisme; a kind of matter-action painting modeled after Bram Bogart, whom he had met in Paris.
In addition to being a visual artist, Cremer is also known for his 1964 novel I, Jan Cremer.
The painting offered by us appears to be from the first half of the 1960s; it is clearly inspired by the Informal Group (1959, see our website under Art Movements) and the matter painting of that era.
