Biography

Nanninga did not study at the Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague until a relatively late age. He spent several visits to Paris in 1946 and 1947, where he received instruction in abstract painting from Geer van Velde. By 1949, Nanninga was working abstractly, influenced by the French abstract art movements (Ecole de Paris). He was a member of Fugare from 1960 to 1962 and a member of the Posthorn Group (both New Hague School) from 1956 to 1962.
Nanninga admired the experiments of contemporary young artists working together in the Experimental Group (later Cobra). In addition to Nanninga’s abstract work, we see expressionist work more in line with the Cobra group.
